The Green Bay Packers are probably going to be active before the NFL trade deadline (November 1).
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has made it clear he wants the team to explore the trade market. And I’m betting the Packers will look to add a wide receiver.
If that’s the case, it will likely spell the end of wide receiver Amari Rodgers’ time in Green Bay. Rodgers, a former third-round draft selection, has been an afterthought this season. The former Clemson standout has just one reception this season for 14 yards. He has just five receptions since being drafted by the Packers in 2021.
If Rodgers isn’t traded, there’s a decent chance he’s released. Green Bay, however, will explore every trade avenue before releasing him.
It’s unlikely that the Packers will get much for Rodgers. But I think there’s one scenario where they could get a late-round draft pick for the under-performing wide receiver.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jacksonville Jaguars were willing to give a seventh-round pick for Rodgers. That’s because Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was teammates with Rodgers at Clemson. And the two had a decent enough connection that Rodgers ended up being a third-round selection.
It seems like NFL teams love pairing wide receivers with their college quarterbacks these days (Joe Burrow/Ja’Marr Chase, Derek Carr/Davante Adams for example).
Rodgers obviously isn’t on the level of either of those two wide receivers, but he still has a connection with Lawrence that could work in the NFL. It would be a low-risk move for the Jaguars and it would give Green Bay some breathing room (and an extra roster spot) to make a trade or two before the November 1 deadline.
