The Kansas City Chiefs have had more help from the running back position this year than they have had the last few. It is giving me 2019 vibes when Damien Williams was a very huge focal point of the offense.
Now it’s Jerick McKinnon and rookie running back Isiah Pacheco that are getting the job done.
Let’s move to the receivers now. Remember this team was supposed to be bad on offense without Tyreek Hill on their team? The receiving group was supposed to be very bad. Well, at least that was the narrative they were trying to create about the Chiefs.
Instead, they still have the best offense in the league because guys are stepping up. JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, and many others are having great seasons, better than everyone thought.
Having those guys takes so much pressure off of the Chiefs’ best weapon in Travis Kelce.
“Yeah I mean that’s the great thing is at the receiver position and at the running back position and even the tight end position guys are coming in and making plays happens,” Mahomes said. “We’re able to get other guys rest, especially like Travis (Kelce) and stuff because we’ve got guys like Noah (Gray) and Jody (Fortson) and now Blake (Bell) that can come in and fill those roles to a degree.
“I mean Travis is a special player, I mean all these guys that are starters are special players, but we’ve built up so much depth within this offense that we can kind of rotate guys in, and everybody can be fresh when they’re in there.”
Travis Kelce demands a lot of attention when on the field, so it kind of goes both ways in that he is helping those guys too. But, the backups, or the guys that come in for a play or two to give the starters a rest, they are just as important.
Mahomes is making sure we know, and they know that the unsung heroes are the backup tight ends in the guys he names, the running backs, and this new and revamped wide receiver room.
If this team were to win the Super Bowl, it would be because of what they have built in the role of players. This team is special, especially on offense, and Mahomes knows he can’t do it himself. He is giving praise to the guys no one is thinking about.
