The Kansas City Chiefs are doing something in this upcoming draft that they have been doing for the last five years – ignoring the quarterbacks who are projected to go high in the draft.
Of course, they do need another backup now after Chad Henne retired, but, they definitely don’t need a starter.
Even if they aren’t really paying attention to or evaluating what the top quarterback prospects are doing, I think everyone saw or heard what one of them said on Friday.
Anthony Richardson is one of the top prospects in the draft, and is being compared to guys like Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson, yet, Patrick Mahomes is who he wants to be like.
“I want to be a legend. I want to be like Patrick Mahomes,” Richardson said at the NFL Combine. “I want to be like Tom Brady. I want to be one of the greats. I will be one of the greats because I’m willing to work that hard to get to that point,” Richardson said. “So, to answer your question, I feel like I’m going to be one of the greats in the next few years.”
Mahomes is inspiring the new era of quarterbacks that are coming into the league.
Sure, he said he wants to be like Brady, but he also said Mahomes and he said that name first.
I think if that shows anything, it shows just how big of an impact the two-time Super Bowl MVP is having on the kids coming into the league.
Let’s hope for the Chiefs’ sake, because they will eventually play Richardson, that he doesn’t turn out to be as good as Mahomes.
With his size and running ability, that would be downright scary.
